Learning Torah? Me?
Torah: drink it in!
Three days after they left Egypt, the Jewish people complained they had no water. As a result of this, it was decreed that Torah should be read three times a week in every shul. What’s the connection? The Torah is as necessary for the Jewish soul as water is for the human body. One simply cannot survive without the other, each depends on the other for its survival.
Torah is often compared to water in our tradition. Rabbi Akiva was particularly fond of the allusion. On one occasion he said that it was as ridiculous to believes Jews could survive without Torah, as to suggest that fish could live on dry land. On another, he saw how a persistent drip of water had eventually pierced a hole in a rock, and understood that Torah’s words could penetrate even the hardest heart.
So here is your nourishment, here is the elixir of your life, turn to Torah and be refreshed and renewed and embark on a new encounter with life.
Over the summer our Education Team at Blake Street have been hard at work, watering the garden of Torah, evaluating our program, pruning where necessary and planting some new seeds. Everyone is invited to pick something from these pages—even a well-established shiur will be very welcoming to newcomers, and there are others in which everyone is new. We look forward to seeing you, and hearing your comments and feedback on what we offer.
