‘Dignity, Honour and the Alter’

Given at Blake Street Hebrew Congregation: 10 May 2011.

Dayan Boruch Rubanowitz

Playing God – who makes the decisions as a life comes to an end?

Dayan Rubanowitz is a faculty member at the Institute of Dayanim in Jerusalem and has semicha from Lakewood and leading rabbinic personalities in Israel. He was Melbourne at the invitation of the Rabbinical Council of Victoria, who he is advising on the establishment of a Bet Din for financial disputes.

His talk to Blake Street focus on the halachic issues that arise at the end of a person’s life as a result of modern medical technology. How do we define when a person is actually dead? How, and in what circumstances may we disconnect a ventilator? Must we do everything to prolong life, or do we allow nature to take its course?

HELPING OUR CHILDREN TO ADVANCE
A Brief Introduction to Feuerstein’s Theories and their Applications

by Rabbi Rafi Feuerstein. Rav Rafi is the founder of Tzohar and the co-chairman of the Rabbinical board of Tzohar. He is
Vice-Chairman of the Feuerstein Institute, son and protégé of Prof. Feuerstein and himself the father of a son with Down syndrome.

The Feuerstein Institute, based in Jerusalem, is headed by Prof. Reuven Feuerstein, a clinical, developmental and cognitive psychologist who is world renowned for his theories which propose that intelligence is ‘modifiable’ rather than ‘fixed’ and that intelligence can be modified through mediated interventions.

For more than 50 years, Feuerstein’s theories and applied systems have been implemented in both clinical and classroom settings across the world. There are more than 2,000 scientific research studies and countless case studies with various learning populations, including special needs children. Today his work is being implemented in more than 50 countries worldwide.
